The dance is mentioned for the first time in Bible, in the Exodus. It is said that Miriam took a tamburine in her hand and started dancing with the women of Israel on the shore of the Red Sea, and since then, the dance has become part of the jewish soul. The dance has become a mean of celebrating the military victories, the holidays, the harvest, the joy, the weddings.

There were at least 11 words used by the ancient jews to determine a special dance. Even the words "machol" and "rikud" have ancient origin.

After the destruction of the second Temple in Jerusalem (year 70 e.n), the Jews have spread all over the world. This is how Diaspora was born and the folk jewish dances were influenced by the characteristics of the areas where the Jews settled. The first israeli folk dance was Hora Agati created in 1920 by the choregrapher Baruch Agati. This happened with 28 years before the establishment of the State of Israel.

The israeli dance is a mixture of many and different cultures that came across the area of Palestine, and later of Israel. Many of the authentic israeli dances which were composed by immigrants, as well, contain movements that express the hard work of "building" the State of Israel. The songs also speak about this spirit.

The first sources were the east-european, arab, yemenite styles. Recently, the greek, french, turkish, latin and even the american rock have influenced the modern israeli dance.

As about origins, the hora (danced in circle) comes from Romania (yeeee:) , the hasidic dance (rikud hasidi) is from the hasidic movement from Eastern Europe (XVIII century) and reflects the religious concept of the hasidim that says that the love for God means love for life; the yemenite step expresses the way the yemenites were moving on the hot sand of the desert; tcherkssia comes from Russia and the debka is an arab dance.
